Frequently Asked Questions
Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers.
What are the basic requirements to apply for undergraduate programs in the U.S.?
To apply, you'll generally need your high school transcripts, English proficiency scores (like TOEFL or IELTS), standardized test scores (SAT/ACT — optional at many schools), letters of recommendation, a personal essay (like the Common App essay), and a completed application form. Some universities may have additional requirements like a portfolio or interview.
Do I need the SAT or ACT to apply?
Many U.S. universities are now test-optional, meaning you’re not required to submit SAT/ACT scores. However, strong test scores can still boost your application or help with scholarships. It depends on the schools you're targeting, so always check each university’s policy before applying.
Can I get scholarships as an international student?
Yes! Many U.S. universities offer merit-based or need-based scholarships for international students. Some are automatically considered with your application, while others require a separate form. Research each school’s scholarship page and apply early—funding can be competitive.
How important is the Common App essay?
Very important. The Common App essay is your chance to show who you are beyond your grades. It's often the only part of your application where your personality and story come through. A well-crafted essay can make a big difference, especially for selective schools.
How do I choose the right universities for me?
Start by thinking about your academic interests, budget, preferred location, and class size. Then consider the university’s rankings, support for international students, and campus culture. Creating a balanced list of “reach,” “match,” and “safety” schools is key.
Will studying in the U.S. help my career after graduation?
Yes, U.S. degrees are highly valued worldwide. Studying in the U.S. also builds soft skills, cultural exposure, and connections. Many programs offer internships and career support. With Optional Practical Training (OPT), you may be able to work in the U.S. for up to 3 years after graduation in STEM fields.
Can international students work in the U.S. during their studies?
Yes, international students on an F-1 visa can work legally on campus during their studies. You’re allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks (like summer or winter).
Most on-campus jobs pay between $8 to $15 per hour, depending on the state and role. Over a year (including summer), you can earn roughly $7,000 to $10,000 or more if you work consistently.
Off-campus work requires special authorization like CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training), usually after your first year.
